Q: What is the WREC Wireless Internet Service Network?

A: Subscribers are provided with high speed wireless equipment that links their home (or business) PC to the network and server at Wells Rural Electric Company in Wells, rather than via a phone modem hooked up to a local telephone line or cable modem. Users can then simultaneously and independently access local news, weather, sports, entertainment information, and other local content from servers around the world! Back to Top

Q: What equipment will be installed?

A: For standard installation, a box (about the size of a small cereal box) containing the internet bridge and wireless antenna will be installed outside your house, usually on the roof. An ethernet cable will be plugged into your computer.

Once installed, this "certain equipment" remains the property of WREC and will be maintained or replaced free of charge by WREC technicians should any problems arise from the normal use of this equipment. Subscribers who are judged by WREC to have misused or abused any or all of the equipment will be required to pay for repair or replacement of those componenets requiring repair or replacement.

Q: How fast is WREC’s Wireless Internet connection?

A: Subscribers to WREC's wireless system can expect speeds that are up to 10 -25 times faster as compared to dial up service, depending on the plan you select. However there are many other things that affect the speed of data transfer such as the speed of the internet connection at the site you're accessing and the number of users being served at that site. Q: The User's Agreement refers to the ability for WREC to provide the Wireless Internet Service to subscribers as long as Acceptable Physical Conditions exist. What are the Acceptable Physical Conditions?

A: In order for subscribers to have the ability to connect with WREC's Wireless Internet Service, each subscriber must hava a "substantially clear line of sight" between at least one of WREC's transmitting antenna towers, and the antenna equipment WREC will mount somewhere on the subscriber's property. Any number of obstructions may be found to exist that could interfere with the transmitting and receiving of wireless signals, including but not limited to trees and their foliage, buildings, power poles, etc.

A qualified WREC technician will make an appointment with you to determine the adequacy of signal strength at your property before scheduling any installation of the wireless service.

Q: What is broadband wireless technology?

A: Wireless broadband technology provides high speed Internet access without cable, fiber optic, or phone line connections. Data is transmitted wirelessly like radio signals, allowing for two-way transmission of data, voice and video between your home computer and WREC’s wireless Access Point. Back to Top
